Starr Academy Education
Rawhide’s on-site high school, Starr Academy, is fully accredited by the Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Accreditation (WRISA). WRISA is a state chapter of the National Federation of Nonpublic School State Accrediting Associations which is recognized by the College Board and the Office of Non-Public Education, an office within the U. S. Department of Education. The school was named after Rawhide’s co-founder Bart Starr, legendary quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.
Individual Education Plan (IEP)
There is a direct link between high school truancy and juvenile delinquency. If a student has poor study habits, he may be struggling with reading, writing, or arithmetic. This, along with young males thinking reading and studying are ‘not cool’, makes it very difficult for them to succeed academically. After years of working with at-risk boys, we have discovered that many arrive at Rawhide with a 3rd or 4th grade reading and math level, and have not developed consistent and healthy study habits. Without these basic skills, they are simply not motivated to try when it comes to school.
After the initial assessment Rawhide, along with a case worker, sets specific educational goals for each at-risk student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) while he is here. Our class sizes are small, giving each student the attention he needs to make progress in reaching his goals.
Starr Academy education offers classes in math, reading, social studies, science, computers, art, physical education and life skills. In addition, Title 1 Math and Title 1 Reading are available for students who are deficient in these areas.
Many Rawhide students make dramatic improvements in academics and the teaching staff at Starr Academy work hard to help them catch up in their credits before leaving Rawhide. Students gain confidence and hope in a brighter future where school and learning are no longer impossible feats, but have become the means of achieving their goals. >>> Meet our teachers.<<<
Students also have the opportunity to participate in Starr Academy’s interscholastic basketball and track teams if they chose to do so.
