Rawhide Equine Assisted Program

Rawhide Equine Assisted Program or REAP

In this innovative counseling approach, a youth is teamed with a horse as they work together through therapeutic activities. These activities help them work on issues such as:

  1. Anger management
  2. Thinking errors
  3. Alcohol and substance abuse
  4. Relationship building
  5. Boundaries

For example, the youth may learn how to guide a horse through an obstacle course. This requires:

  1. Listening
  2. Concentration
  3. Patience

By successfully completing the activity, it will help to build confidence in overcoming obstacles in his own life.

Benefits of the REAP program include:

  1. Learning about oneself
  2. Building strengths
  3. Working on weaknesses

Students also learn how to care for the horses by cleaning and feeding them as part of the Work Experience Program.

Students have the opportunity to work with the horses as part of their individual, group or family sessions of the equine assisted program. Family sessions provide an opportunity for you and your son to learn more about how you interact as a family.

During all sessions, a Rawhide social worker is directly involved.
