As you may already know, there is a direct link between truancy and juvenile delinquency. If a student has poor study habits he may be struggling with reading, writing and arithmetic. This, along with a propensity for young males to think reading and studying are not cool, makes it very difficult for them to succeed academically.
After years of working with at-risk boys, we have discovered that many arrive to Rawhide with a 3rd or 4th grade reading and math level, and have not developed consistent study habits. Without these basic skills, they are simply not motivated to try when it comes to school. |

After the initial assesment, Rawhide, along with the case worker, sets specific educational goals for each at-risk student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) while he is here. Our class sizes are small giving each student the attention he needs to make progress in reaching his goals.
Starr Academy offers classes in math, reading, social studies, science, computers, art, physical education and life skills. In addition, Title 1 Math and Title 1 Reading is available for students who are deficient in these areas.
Many Rawhide students make dramatic improvements in academics and the teaching staff at Starr Academy work hard to help them catch up in their credits before leaving the ranch. Students also gain confidence and find hope in a brighter future where school and learning are no longer impossible feats, but have become the means of achieving their goals.
In addition to a top-notch education, students will have the opportunity to particiate in Starr Academy's interscholastic basketball and track teams if they chose to do so.
