REAP - Rawhide Equine Assisted Therapy

Horses are true to their nature and provide a great way for a young man to see themselves mirrored by the horse.

In this innovative counseling approach each student is teamed up with a horse and they work together through therapeutic activities. These activities help them work on issues such as: anger management, thinking errors, alcohol and substance abuse, relationship building and boundaries.

For example, a student may learn how to guide a horse through an obstacle course. This requires attentive listening and concentration in order to read the horse. Successfully completing the activity helps him build confidence in overcoming obstacles in his life. Students also learn how to care for the horses by cleaning and feeding them as part of the Work Experience Program.

Students have the opportunity to work with the horses as part of their individual, group or family sessions. Family sessions provide an opportunity for the young man and his parents to learn more about they interact as a family. A Rawhide social worker is directly involved in each session.
