 | Giving In Honor and In Memory Of A Loved One | | Rawhide is honored to receive memorial contributions from families of loved ones who have supported the organization. Memorial plates are diplayed in Rawhide's Welcome Center as a reminder of your family support of the young men who come to the ranch. We provide a thank you to all donors in acknowledgement of gifts received to the surviving family member.
In addition, there are currently many established memorials and funds available to donate into if you are interested. Below is a description of what each fund supports. |
|
Tuition Assistance | Families of at-risk youth often lack sufficient finances to provide for their son's long-term treatment and education at Rawhide. Funds are needed to ease the financial burden low-income families face. Your support will help more young men get the quality education they need to experience positive change in their lives. |
|
Founders Endowment | Established in 2007 in honor of John and Jan Gillespie's 50th wedding anniversary.
Funds are dedicated to supporting the Gillespies’ vision of helping troubled young men, to enable them to come to Rawhide.
During the 35 years that John and Jan led Rawhide, they personally served as houseparents to over 350 young men. No one was turned away due to lack of funds. They relied on their faith, knowing that God would work in the hearts of donors to provide what was needed ... He always did. |

Bret Starr Memorial Fund | Bret Starr, youngest son of Bart and Cherry Starr, was a caring and sensitive person. He loved animals and enjoyed riding the horses and playing with the dogs and cats when he visited Rawhide in his youth. He was popular in school and enjoyed music, he even put together a band with his friends.
Somewhere along the way, without anyone suspecting, Bret started using drugs. In 1988 he seemed to have finally gotten his life under control thanks to some counseling, an open family relationship, and a renewed commitment to God. But, on July 7, 1988, at the age of 24, a small amount of cocaine stopped his heart.
Following his death, The Starrs asked that memorial gifts be sent to Rawhide in memory of Bret and the Bret Star Memorial Fund was established.
Interest income from this restricted fund provides support to alumni with educational needs, medical emergencies, housing, counseling costs, or other emergency expenses.
Bret's spirit lives on through the numerous alumni who have benefitted from this fund. |

Leah Price Memorial Fund | Leah Price was a woman of integrity and character, whose life focused on faith, love and service to others. In 1997 Leah married Ken Price, an auto mechanic employed at Rawhide Boys Ranch. In 1998 Leah joined her husband in serving Rawhide as an assistant teacher at Starr Academy.
In 2001, Ken and Leah felt a calling to serve as Houseparents on the ranch and moved into one of the About Face homes. In 2003, Ken and Leah stepped forward to serve as the first Houseparents in Rawhide's newly created Academy Program, a private placement program for at-risk youth who come to the ranch voluntarily.
In May of 2004, Leah was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout her five-month battle with cancer, Leah remained commited to her faith in God, believing that He was in complete control. Undaunted by the pain of her illness, she courageously displayed depth of character by loving and serving the boys in the Academy Program wholeheartedly.
Leah's battle with cancer ended on October 25, 2004. Her legacy continues today through the Leah Price Memorial Fund. Interest income from this restricted fund provides tuition assistance for young men who voluntarily come to Rawhide's Academy Program. |

Gabrielse Woodworking Shop | New to Starr Academy in 2007, the Gabrielse Woodworking Shop allows young men to learn more about woodworking as a trade and as a hobby. Due to the generous donation of top-notch woodworking equipment and a supply of wood from George Gabrielse, the students have been able to build many beautiful objects including a bookcase, benches, handheld mirrors, a harvest table and CD racks.
Funds are needed for ongoing operations of the woodshop including wages, materials and supplies. If you'd like to contribute to the operation of the shop, visit the link below to donate to the Gabrielse Woodworking Shop fund. |
