Student of the Month - February 2010 |
Sergeant | My name is Marcell, and I am 16 years old. I’m from Racine County, and have been at Rawhide for three months. My favorite things to do include playing basketball and football, bike riding, lifting weights, and playing with animals. I really enjoy being in Coach Andy’s (academic instructor) class and learning about the Bill of Rights. Playing on the Starr Academy basketball team as the point guard has taught me how to be a leader. My goals are to graduate from high school with a basketball scholarship and to be a positive role model for my community. I hope to attend a college in Texas and become a veterinarian.
I also enjoy job training with Captain Guerin (job trainer). He is funny and cool. Working at the Salvation Army and also splitting wood for people in the community are some of my favorite projects. It was fun working at a local nature center and helping set up a stage for the Power of One concert in Appleton because of the friendly people. I also learned a lot from my Smith Home resident instructors, Mr. Gary and Mr. Joe. They each have strong personalities and show us courage.
I have always liked the rank system because I look forward to achieving a new rank. The About Face program has helped me become a leader and taught me discipline. It is a good program and teaches us selfless service. A lot of staff have encouraged me to do the best I can, especially Mr. Tony (resident instructor). When I am down, I’m encouraged to get back up. I have also helped build others’ character by encouraging them. I have felt loved and accepted in the About Face program. So I accepted the program and have become more mature and positive.

 | How the Student of the Month is Selected | | | Each month Rawhide's Starr Academy staff nominates students who are doing well both in school and in their treatment plan. From those nominations a student is selected. The final selection is then reviewed by the student's Rawhide Social Worker, Houseparents, Work Experience Trainer and their peers. If everyone agrees with the school's assessment, the student then has the priviledge of sharing their story in a 200-250 word essay. |
