Student of the Month - November 2008

With Help

My name is Bee and I am 15 years old. I’m from Milwaukee County and have been in the About Face program at Rawhide for almost three months. My favorite things to do are play sports with staff and peers, and help others with chores. I really enjoy being at Rawhide, and my goal is to leave here with the rank of sergeant. I plan to stay in school, get my HSED (high school equivalency diploma), then go straight into the Marine Corps. When these goals are achieved, the future will then provide me with new goals.

While I was at a placement and not at my home in early July 2007, my mom passed away from cancer. I didn’t attend the funeral and have never seen her gravesite. This has had a major effect on me; I just try to keep myself smiling so I won’t think too much about it.

When I first got to Rawhide, I wasn’t a religious person, but now I pray at night for my family and others. I pray for my brother who is in prison and for those in need. I don’t usually pray for good things to happen to me because I have everything I need, which is my family. They keep me on track. Before, I wasn’t a nice person; I was a violent person who was looking for a death door because I hated life and myself. I’ve changed my old ways and I’m going to keep it like that, with the help of my family and the Lord Jesus Christ. I’m glad I came to Rawhide because if I hadn’t I might be dead. I thank all the people who helped me think positively and strengthen my family relationships. I thank the staff here at Rawhide for the time they give me and, most of all, thanks to my family.
