Student of the Month - November 2007 |
A Better Future | My name is Jordan, and I am 17 years old. I am from Ozaukee County and have been at Rawhide for two months. My hobbies include basketball, reading, and weightlifting. I really enjoy all my classes because the teachers are unique and enjoy helping me. I hope to go to a University of Wisconsin school upon graduation from high school. I plan on becoming a park ranger.
When I first came to Rawhide, I was nervous about what people would think of me and about the changes I would have to make. When I was back home, I never did well in school and got in trouble with the law. I wasn’t going to finish high school or pursue any further education when I turned 18.
This all changed in my first month at Rawhide. I began weightlifting with Andy (academic instructor), and he encouraged me to always go further than I thought I could. He would also encourage me in the classroom, which made me excited to be at school. I began to gain confidence and pursue goals in school and in the Gillespie Home (my home at Rawhide).
My change did not just happen at school; it also happened at the Gillespie Home. Jon, my housefather, believes in me when I set out to accomplish tasks. He always makes sure to congratulate me on my successes, which makes me want to do more. Another person in my house who helps is Rob (resident instructor). Whenever I am having a problem, he helps me through it and holds me accountable for my actions. I also get help from Molly (resident instructor), who always wants me to do better so I can succeed later in life.
I have new goals after being here two months, like finishing high school and going to college. I thank Rawhide every day for changing my life.
