Rawhide Students Become Published Poets

In the fall of 2007 Starr Academy teacher Terri Simpson presented a challenging opportunity to students in her English class. She invited them to write an original poem; it was not a class assignment and was to be done on the students’ own time. The reward: poems would be submitted to a Creative Communication poetry and essay contest. If chosen, the poems would be published in the anthology “A Celebration of Young Poets” and would also be eligible to win cash prizes.

A few weeks later, Terri was thrilled to receive five poems from her students. She stated, “I’m impressed because they tried. It wasn’t an assignment; these guys just love to write.”

To be considered for the contest, poems needed to be original work, no longer than 21 lines, and had to have proper grammar and punctuation throughout. The poems were judged by a panel of teachers from elementary, secondary and higher education with a literature background.

Recently, Terri and her students learned that four of the five poems submitted were chosen to be published. This is quite an accomplishment and an honor for the staff and students at Starr Academy. Thousands of poems were entered and most were not invited to be published. The young poets are very excited to have their poems published for the world to see, to read the touching poems written by Rawhide’s students, visit the links below.
