Rawhide Cadets Join University of Alabama at Birmingham to Honor Bart Starr |
April 11, 2007 | In March four Rawhide About Face cadets journeyed to Birmingham, Alabama to surprise Bart and Cherry Starr with a color guard presentation at a ceremony they were being honored at by the University of Alabama. Virginia Gilbert Loftin, Director of Development, Department of Medicine, related, “Bart and Cherry were stunned and very moved (in his words, “completely blown away”), and both shed a tear, as did many others in the audience of nearly 400 people. The Rawhide color guard added so much to the evening; their presence was the highlight for our honorees.” The students were provided opportunities to visit the McWane Science Museum, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (where Bart is an inductee), the UAB-Purdue baseball game, and Dreamland, where they were treated to four slabs of ribs and a bucket of banana pudding at the most famous rib joint in the Southeast.
The Rawhide color guard is a precision marching group that presents and posts the flags. Located outside of New London, Wisconsin, Rawhide Boys Ranch emphasizes a faith-based traditional family environment and serves at-risk and court-referred young men. Their mission is to inspire and equip at-risk teenage boys to become responsible young men through family-centered care, treatment, and education. Rawhide is largely supported by donations of cars, boats, campers, and financial gifts.
