Rawhide Alumnus Signs Letter of Intent with the University of Minnesota-Duluth |
February 1, 2006 | On Wednesday February 1, 2006, Rawhide students and staff stood and applauded as Reggie Spencer, a 2004 Rawhide alumnus, and currently a senior at Weyauwega-Fremont high school, accepted a scholarship to play college football for the University of Minnesota- Duluth. He was pursued by twelve different schools, and by the end of last week had narrowed his decision between Duluth and the University of North Dakota. February 1st marks the first day for high school athletes to sign letters of intent to respective colleges who are recruiting them.
In 2004, Spencer was named the Weyauwega-Fremont football team’s Offensive Player of the Year. In 2005 he helped lead his team to the WIAA Division 4 Semi-finals by scoring 20 touchdowns, rushing over 1,200 yards and averaged 10.7 yards per carry throughout the season. He was also given the title of Honorable Mention All-State by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. His accomplishments not only included football but track and field as well. In 2005, he won the Division 2 triple jump and took third place in the long jump.
Growing up, Reggie received very little structure and family supervision. His placement at Rawhide Boys Ranch in December of 2003 gave him training and education that led to remarkable changes in his life. While Reggie was in Rawhide’s foster care program in 2004, he was given the opportunity to attend Weyauwega-Fremont High School and participate on the football, basketball, and track teams.
After signing his letter of intent, Reggie addressed Rawhide students and staff by saying, “Wow! I don’t even know where to begin. Thank you to all who have helped me along the way. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the staff and my foster family. To the Rawhide students, I want you to know that if you grab a hold of what this program has to offer, your future can be brighter. The staff here really want what is best for you, so listen to what they have to say, and they can open all kinds of doors for you.”
Located outside of New London, Wisconsin, Rawhide Boys Ranch emphasizes a faith-based traditional family environment and serves at-risk and court-referred young men.
