Houseparent Job FAQs

Below are some answers to questions typically asked by Houseparents. This page has been designed to help give you a better idea of the job requirements and the types of activities you will be a part of in this position.

It is, however, important to note that no two days are alike at Rawhide. Working with at-risk teenage boys every day brings its own adventures and challenges, some days will be better than others. The need for patience and flexibility is very important for Houseparents.

What schedule do Houseparents work at Rawhide?

Houseparents generally work 7 days on, 4 days off, and then 7 days on and 3 days off, although some programs may require a different schedule. Rawhide has found that these schedules provide the necessary consistency and stability in the homes to operate smoothly while supporting our family model.

Would we be working alone in the house?

Most of the time, no. Each house is staffed with one Houseparent couple and two or three Resident Instructors. The Resident Instructors play a support role for the Houseparents and fill the “big brother” or “big sister” role in the family model. Rawhide has a treatment team approach in working with the youth. The treatment team consists of the living unit staff (the Houseparents and Resident Instructors), the living unit Social Worker and a teacher liaison from Starr Academy.

Where would we live if we became Houseparents at Rawhide?

Rawhide provides Houseparents with a private apartment that is attached to the living unit in which they work. Each apartment includes a master bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and a guest room.

How many youth are placed in each house?

Up to 10 young men are placed in each home. At a given time, there could be 5-10 youth in your home.

How old are the youth that Rawhide works with?

Generally, Rawhide works with youth between the ages of 13-17 with the average age being 15.

What are the qualifications for becoming Houseparents?

Rawhide looks for dedicated, mission-minded married couples that have the ability to establish healthy relationships and boundaries with the youth to fill the Houseparent position. Experience with youth is helpful. The ability to model patience, love and respect while providing a structured environment is important!

How are youth placed at Rawhide?

Youth are referred to Rawhide by either a private referral from their parents, or by county and state placing agencies.

What is the interview/hiring process like?

The hiring process begins by you submitting your resumes and a cover letter. Rawhide's goal is to be in contact with you within a couple of days of receiving your resumes. At that point, a recruiting specialist will schedule a brief (45 minute to one hour), informal phone interview and answer any additional questions you may have. After the informal phone interview, you will receive the application materials. The rest of the process may consist of a formal interview done either in person or via the phone, followed by an extended visit here at Rawhide, and background/reference checks.

Will we receive training?

Yes! Rawhide is committed to giving new employees the training they need to perform their job duties. For Houseparents, this would consist of First Aid/CPR training, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, medication training, and POSC (Principles of Subject Control)- to name just a few! Our strong team approach means that you will always have access to other youth home staff and their valuable experiences and insight in your work with the youth.
